Abstract

The present work intends to dissertate on the importance of Environmental Education in the face of current environmental problems. As a starting point, expose a brief historical composition of Environmental Education in the context of São Tomé and Príncipe, its relevance in the formal and informal context, reflect on the importance of attitudes and values of environmental order, through the emergence of new challenges of humanity, seeking to know and analyze the existing scientific contributions on the subject. For the development of this essay, a bibliographic research was carried out on the theme that served as a theoretical basis and guided the investigation. The study shows that Environmental Education is important, because it contributes to the change of values, mentalities and attitudes, promoting an ecologically correct posture and the development of an environmental awareness, if worked in all levels of education and also in the informal context, aiming to create respect for life, conservation, defense and improvement of the environment.
